Haiti remain in its Constitution, no consecutive reelection

Puerto Principe, May 10 (EFE) .- Haiti remain in its Constitution the principle of non- consecutive presidential re-election after the National Assembly to conclude the process of amendments to the constitution, parliamentary sources said. Haitian lawmakers held the first of two presidential terms, separated by an interval of five years as no consensus on the amendment to Article 134.1, as it permitted a president to hold office for two consecutive terms.
Amendments to the Constitution were approved last night in a marathon session with a support of 81 MPs, while the remaining 10 legislators present at the meeting abstained. Senators and deputies
introduced in the country's Constitution the principle of multiple nationality, allowing Haitians holding another nationality may serve some functions in the political sphere.
However, access to the offices of president, prime minister, senator and representative will remain reserved for those who only have Haitian nationality.
Parliament created a new institution called the Constitutional Council to determine the constitutionality of laws and also approved the principle of a quota of 30% representation women in public services.
The amendments to the constitution were made by the outgoing president, René Préval, for processing in the current legislature, which opened on April 27 with a delay of four months.
The constitutional amendment shall enter into force after its publication by the Executive in the official newspaper "Le Moniteur", which must occur before 14 May, the date of the inauguration of President-elect Michel Martelly. EFE
